When he came to training camp in the fall of 2000, the Senators wanted Havlat to demonstrate he was physically strong enough to compete and contribute at the NHL level. So the highly touted winger went out and scored 4 preseason goals, tops on the team, including a pair against Edmonton.

A first round draft pick in 1999, Martin remained in his homeland the last year and helped Trinec to a fourth-place finish in the Czech Republic Extraleague. The Sens broke in the speedy sniper to spark their attack as he had done for past teams, and to skate regularly on the power play. The rest is history and Martin Havlat went on to star in Chicago and as an alternate captain of the Minnesota Wild!

• 2000-01 NHL Rookie Card
