On February 11, 2012 the Toronto Maple Leafs officially retired Matt Sundin’s number retired in a pregame ceremony before the Maple Leafs faced the Montreal Canadiens. He was the 18th player so honored by the team, including fellow Swede Borje Salming - No. 21.Sundin finished his career with 420 goals and 987 points in 981 games and he is the Leafs top point scorer in history. He never won the Stanley Cup in his 13 seasons with Toronto.

Sundin was drafted No. 1 overall by Quebec in 1989 and was traded to Toronto in 1994. He played his last season in Vancouver and his last season in Toronto was in 2007-08. After making his NHL debut in 1990 with the Quebec Nordiques (now Colorado Avalanche), 230-pound, 6' 5'' center Mats Sundin made the move to the Toronto Maple Leafs in 1994.
